Tough questions

Z has been asking questions and questions and more questions.  Mercy, this age wants to know a lot!  And they're not simple questions, or questions with an easy answer.  And they are non-stop!

For example:
Mom, if God sees us all white after we are clean (because of Jesus), then what about people who are brown, like Ms. Nikki (his Sunday School teacher)?
Mom, if you were holding Grandma Lora's hand when she died and went to heaven, then how did you get back from heaven?
Mom, why is everyone different colors?
Mom, why did that bad man kill a lot of people (bin Laden)?  How did he kill them?
Mom, how does that dog know not to cross the line (with the zapper box)?
Mom, why can't we say "Oh my gosh"?  Why does gosh sound like God?

Um, yeah.  I have been hit recently that we are truly now shaping him and his thoughts and his world view.  Before this it was training him (discipine, respect, etc), but it has become different...much deeper.  I am amazed at how much he knows and how much he can infer.  I am amazed (and worried and prayerful!) about how much he listens to me and how much he picks up from me.  What an incredible blessing to have these 4 boys...but what an incredible responsibility.

On another note, here is a funny conversation we had recently:
Z (crying):  Mom!  Something went into my body!
K:  What are you talking about?  How did it get there?  What was it?
Z:  I don't know!
K:  How did it get there?
Z:  I ate it!
K:  Huh?  What did you eat?
Z:  I thought it was a booger, but I don't think it really was!
K (rolling in laughter):  Bud, that is why we DON'T EAT BOOGERS.

You can think that if you want...

Today we drove down to Children's Hospital to get some bike helmets for the little boys (only $8, and they get fitted!).  So I point out the Arch on the way, and Z remembers that we saw it when we went to a Cardinals game a several years ago.  This prompts us to this conversation:

-Yeah, I remember going there.  The little boys were there too.
-No they weren't, bud, they weren't born.
-Yeah, they were there.  They have been there.
-No, they haven't.  They were in my tummy the last time we were there...
-Actually, Mom, they HAVE been there.
-No, Z, they have not.  I'm not quite sure what you're thinking of.
-Well, Mom, I think you're wrong.
-Ok, I'm not wrong though.
-Well, Mom, you can think that if you want.

Might not be as funny to anyone else, but these are VERY common phrases that Nate and I use to end conversations when we know Z is wrong (ok, Z, you can think that if you want).  We have also had to teach him not to say, Mom, you're wrong, but instead to say, Well, I think you are wrong.  Cracked me up.  Glad to know he is listening to us, but funny to hear it thrown back at me.  :)

More words

A few more words from Z.

Mote control (for some reason he dropped the "re").
Upside up (instead of right side up).
Pat-er-en (instead of pattern).
Crackernut (nutcracker).
The overs (the credits of a movie).

And today I hollered at him to come back into the dining room after lunch.  I had asked him to clear his place, and he took his plate only, but left the full cup of water.  N had pulled it over.  I showed it to him and told him when I asked him to clear his place, I meant all of his stuff.  He looks dead at me and says, "I'm not cleaning that up."  Ummmm....yeah.  In fact, I was planning on just correcting him and cleaning it up myself, UNTIL that comment.  So he cleaned it up.  He wasn't happy.  :)  But maybe he learned a lesson.

Raccoon holes, revisited

Remembered two more of our family phrases today when Z brought them up.

De-zer-et (dessert).  So cute.

Choke:  When someone throws up, Z calls it "choking".  Tonight he said, "Hey, Mom, did you know choke is all kinds of different colors?"  Disgusting observation, Z, but yes, it is.  We then went into a large discussion about why and when we "choke".

On raccoon holes, on Tuesday morning I actually SAW a raccoon go into a raccoon hole.  Haven't seen one since we lived here, then I write that post, and then one shows up.  Unfortunately, I saw it at the very last minute (just saw the striped tail go in, and talked to the neighbor about how she saw it too), so I didn't get to point it out to Z, but we did have another good discussion about how we don't go near raccoons!

Raccoon holes and more

Just wanted to list a few of my favorite phrases from around here...

Raccoon holes:  Here the boys are playing on a "raccoon hole" (manhole).  We told Z a long time ago to be careful on them, since sometimes raccoons can live in them (they did in our old neighborhood anyway!).  They have now forever been termed "raccoon holes".

Noggit:  In Finding Nemo, Crush (the dad turtle) gives his kid (Squirt) a "noggin" (bumps heads) instead of a high five.  We have been doing this since Z was little, but somehow it got changed to "noggit".  Sidenote:  For a long time, Z used to call turtles "dudes" (since they say that a lot in Finding Nemo).  He used to love Finding Nemo, it was the first movie he loved and watched every day (when he was about the little boys age).  When he was maybe 2 1/2 he started getting scared of it and refuses to watch it.  What is he scared of?  The sharks, of course, but he is more terrified of Darla (the little girl).  In fact, if you ask him to name scary things, Darla is normally one of them.

Sillies:  The Sunday funnies.  The first time he saw them I must have said something like "Isn't that silly?!" and it stuck.  Now he asks for the sillies.  Love it.

Appetized:  Z came home from church one morning and we asked him what he learned about, and he told us they learned about Jesus, and how he got appetized.  It took me awhile to figure it out, but he still consistently says "baptized" as "appetized".  Hilarious.

BOO!

Boo!  This is the first word (other than Dada and sometimes Mama) spoken in our house.  It started last week.
Whenever I change diapers (all too often), I toss the pants on the boys face, then say, "Where's _____?"  They quickly follow by yanking the pants off and saying "buh!"   L was first to get it, quickly followed by N.  I'm not sure C has it quite yet.  Since then, we have progressed to N covering his eyes then saying "buh!", and L covering his ears and saying "buh!".  Why his ears...?  No clue.  But we're trying to get C to cover his mouth as we do this...see no, hear no, speak no evil ;)
N's first word (last week also, the same day L shouted out buh!) was "uh, uh, uh!" as in a barking dog.  He peered over the fort to the neighbor's yard (they have 2 wildly obnoxious yippy dogs) and asked, "uh, uh, uh?".  C might have this one as well...not sure.
Other than that, still no words.  Dada is very common...especially when he comes home.  "Dada, dada, dada, dada, daaaaadeeeee!"  Mama...not so much, normally if anything it is "muh?!" or "mamaaaaaaaaaaaa".  Not the high happy yippy squeals of Dada.
N will clearly be our talker.  The kid will just hold monologues.  He reads books out loud, poses questions, and generally just talk your ear off.  L is mostly a grunter/growler. I forgot that Z was totally a grunter/growler too, and look how HE has turned out :)  C is somewhere in the middle.  He is typically the kid to rush to grab something, anything, for us to have and talk about.  Shoes, books, cups, toys.
Soon these boys will be talking our ears off!
