Gymnastics

Z decided he wanted to take gymnastics.  He liked Tball (and I think he will do coach pitch again in the spring), but soccer was "too hard".  I tend to agree...there is a lot of running in soccer.  We have a little girl across the street who he is pals with, and they "play" gymnastics, which is where I think he got the idea.  At any rate, we signed him up.

He is kind of a puppy dog.  He is so big for his age, and has kind of had a hard time growing into his body.  He is just now really getting the hang of his body...hitting and catching a ball, jumping/skipping, etc.  We thought that gymnastics would give him a good overall workout for his body and some general kinesthetic awareness.  We also figured it would be good to get him into the routine of practicing something, with an actual teacher working with him physically.

The other week was "parent education" week, so I got to go into the gym and watch him a little more closely.  He is a good head taller than all the other boys in his class (it is a kindergarten boys class) and probably outweighs them by 20 pounds.  He listens and obeys and does what the teacher asks him to do, but it is hard for him (really all the boys, though).  I think it is because he is still learning the skills the same way the other boys are, but he has a lot more weight to move around!

The past few weeks he has complained and whined the night before gymnastics about not wanting to go because it was hard.  But we already paid for him, and we think it is pretty important for him to follow through on it, anyway.  He needs to learn perseverance...so he goes :)  The day of gymnastics, on the way to and from, and during, he doesn't complain...just the night before (when he is tired and in bed).

At any rate, he is enjoying it (for the most part) and is starting to show some improvement.  He still has a long way to go, but that's what practice is for!
