Pretty much the entire area cancelled fireworks this year because we have been in the middle of a long hot, dry spell. As in 10 days of triple digit weather and waaaay low rainfall for the month. So fireworks are a major fire hazard. But a small little city about 5 minutes from our house kept theirs on as scheduled, on July 3. We decided to brave it. I was hopeful it wouldn't be too chaotic since it wasn't actually the 4th and since it is such a small little town. Thankfully, it was perfect! We got there in plenty of time to get a good seat and parking spot. The boys played with a beach ball and glow sticks while we waited. We also ran to the grocery store that we parked at and got ice cream sandwiches. The weather was hot but not unbearable at 8 at night. It was fun just hanging out for an hour and a half while we waited.
When the first fireworks went off all the boys were sitting on the blanket in front of us. After the first one, all 3 littles (it was their first time) had crawled into our laps in the camp chairs. As N said, "I don't love it, Mama!". After a minute or two of us convincing them that they really were ok and not scary and just cool, they started to like them. Not enough to get out of our laps, but they did enjoy them. :)
We got home pretty quickly too (which was wonderful) and the boys slept til 8 the next morning. Yeehaw! Pretty sure we will make this our tradition as opposed to trying some of the bigger cities. Even though their fireworks are better, it is not worth it while the boys are young to park, walk, wait, watch, and walk 4 exhausted boys BACK to the car. Maybe when they're older.
